MSTB rolls out CTFL examination on new syllabus

The Malaysian Software Testing Board (MSTB) is pleased to announce that starting November 2018, examination for the Certified Tester Foundation Level (CTFL) will be based on the new syllabus - CTFL 2018 Syllabus. The revised syllabus was released by ISTQB in June this year and part of the International Board's continual efforts to keep syllabi current in relation to changes in the software industry.

With this move, all Accredited Training Providers (ATPs) providing training services for candidates intending to sit for certification examination in Malaysia in November 2018 onwards, must update their training materials to comply to the new syllabus. All certification examinations under ISTQB schemes in Malaysia are administered MSTB.

Nevertheless, ISTQB allows examination based on 2011 syllabus to run in parallel until June 2019. During this period, candidates are advised to indicate the syllabus they are opting for at the point of registration for the (CTFL) examination.

Certification for Security Tester

In a related development, MSTB has also announced the availability of certification examination for The Advanced Level Certified Security Tester (CTAL - SEC) in Malaysia. The CTAL - SEC syllabus is intended to build upon the knowledge of a Foundation Level tester who has some experience in security testing and wishes to build on that knowledge. CTFL certification is pre-requisite for candidates sitting for CTAL - SEC examination.

CTAL -SEC is one of the three certifications currently available under ISTQB Specialist track. The other two are Advanced Level Test Automation Engineer and Foundation Level Model-based Tester. While from the Agile track, only Foundation Level Agile Tester (CTFL - Agile) is available. MSTB has also make CTFL-Agile examinations available locally.

The Specialist and Agile tracks complement ISTQB Core tracks which offer CTFL as well as Certified Tester Advanced Level (CTAL) and Certified Tester Expert Level (CTEL) certifications.

Going by the number of certifications, ISTQB is by far the de facto standards for certifications for professional testers. As of December 2017, ISTQB has administered over 785,000 examination and issued more than 570,000 certifications in over 120 countries worldwide.
